The NPPC has a political action committee, PorkPAC, which supports candidates “whose views coincide” with the interests of the industry. It ranks among the top 10 percent of spenders for both lobbying and political contributions in the US, according to OpenSecrets data. The NPPC spent $1.5 million on lobbying in 2019 and made $432,000 worth of political contributions between 2017-2018, 71 percent of which went to Republican candidates. In 2009, the NPPC lobbied against the Waxman-Markey Bill, an Act put forward by two Democratic Representatives Henry Waxman and Edward Markey proposing to cut emissions by introducing a “cap and trade” system. Iowa Senator Ernst has pledged to protect agri-business interests from “undue regulatory burdens,” and credited the Koch Family network of libertarian funders with launching her political career. Inhofe is an outspoken climate science denier who once compared the US Environmental Protection Agency to the Gestapo and has received over $2 million in donations from the oil and gas industry. ĭuring the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, the NPPC supported the Responding to Epidemic Losses and Investing in the Economic Future ( RELIEF) for Producers Act, brought forward by Republican Senators James Inhofe, Joni Ernst, Chuck Grassley and Thom Tillis. The group has been reluctant to refer to human-caused climate change, instead citing “climatic events.” At a press conference in February 2020, the NPPC’s Vice President for Public Affairs and Counsel, Michael Formica, refused to say whether he believed climate change was man-made. The NPPC is a member of “Farmers for a Sustainable Future” ( FSF), an industry alliance formed by major US agricultural trade bodies including the American Farm Bureau Federation, American Soybean Association and National Cattlemen’s Beef Association in February 2020. It focuses particularly on the policy areas of “agriculture and industry, animal well-being and food safety, environment and energy, and international trade”. The NPPC “fights for reasonable federal legislation and regulations”, “maintains and develops export market opportunities” and “protects producers’ livelihoods”, according to its website. The NPPC represents “the federal and global interests” of over 60,000 pork producers in 42 states across the US and has an annual revenue of around $15 million.
